Matteo Guendouzi was embroiled in a mass brawl after Fenerbahce triumphed over Lyon (2-1) in the second leg of the Champions League playoff. The Turkish club advanced with an aggregate score of 3-2.
Following the final whistle, the former Arsenal and Marseille midfielder celebrated exuberantly in front of the fans of his former club's arch-rivals.
The midfielder approached the advertising boards and began to taunt the crowd. According to talkSPORT, he also allegedly made an obscene gesture towards the supporters.
This did not sit well with Lyon's players, and several of them rushed towards Guendouzi, leading to a scuffle involving members of both teams.
As calm was restored, the Frenchman continued his taunting on the way off the pitch, shouting: 'Come on, Marseille!'
Just before heading down the tunnel, a member of the Lyon staff attempted to kick Guendouzi while jumping, triggering yet another brawl.
Guendouzi later defended his actions, stating that insults from the fans prompted his behaviour:
If we can’t celebrate how we want after a match, that upsets me.
The midfielder claimed that the Lyon supporters disrespected him by insulting his family.
Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal backed his player:
We all stood up for Guendouzi. Everyone supported him. That is what team spirit is about.
