Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt has revealed how the team fine-tuned their game plan for the clash with Chelsea, taking advantage of a weakness in the opponent's set piece defence.
The Bees placed significant focus on corner kicks. After two deliveries aimed at the near post in the first half, they identified space at the far post and decided to alter their approach.
Janelt reflected on the match:
We specifically targeted that during the break. We had delivered to the near post twice before and then realised there was massive space at the far post.
We chose to exploit it, and it seemed to work as that was our first corner in the second half.
The German also outlined Brentford's overall game plan. The intention was to press Chelsea aggressively and, when that wasn't feasible, to drop into either a mid or low block, forcing their opponents to shift the ball wide and look for chances on the counter:
With the ball, we wanted to be bolder and show more character. I think we did exactly that today.
