This summer, the Birmingham side secured Garnacho on loan with an obligation to buy for £43 million, pending 'easily achievable conditions' based on match appearances. The forward was eager to rejuvenate his career far from Stamford Bridge, yet the reality has hit hard.
After coming off the bench in the first three matches of the season, Garnacho has found himself firmly rooted on the sidelines. The winger has been left without a single minute of play over three consecutive matches, including the recent Cup victory against Coventry.
Aston Villa’s hierarchy has played a similar card before. Last season, they loaned Harvey Elliott with a buy option that mandated ten appearances. Unai Emery swiftly lost faith in the player, making a point of freezing him at nine matches before sending him back to Anfield.
Chelsea are desperate not to see the Argentinian at their Cobham training base come next season. However, if Garnacho continues to fall behind in the pecking order against George Hemmings and Alisson, the Blues may find themselves facing a rather unwelcome reunion with their pricey asset.
