A TransferRoom report indicates that defensive midfielders are now the most expensive position in football. Spending on them has soared by 191% to €1.38 billion, while interest in strikers and wingers has noticeably declined.

The transfer market has seen a seismic change: strikers are no longer the major expenditure for leading clubs. A recent report from TransferRoom reveals that defensive midfielders have now taken centre stage as the most valuable players in world football.

The latest transfer window showcased an unprecedented surge in interest for players adept at breaking up play and linking defence to attack in the midfield. Significant deals featuring talented individuals such as Bruno Guimaraes, Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Ayub Bouaddi have set new financial benchmarks: clubs' combined outlay on midfielders has skyrocketed by 191%, reaching an eye-watering €1.38 billion.

Additionally, the average transfer fee for a defensive midfielder has surged by 156%, now standing at €9.9 million, outpacing the averages of all other playing positions on the pitch.

In this evolving landscape, traditional forwards, once considered the most sought-after and pricey stars, have seen their prominence diminish within the transfer priorities of sporting directors. The total financial volume of deals involving central strikers dropped by 14%, while expenditure on wide attacking players fell by 8%, solidifying the transition of world football towards a central midfield dominance.
