Richard Hughes has officially left his post as Liverpool's sporting director, confirming his departure after two years at Anfield. His next destination will see him take up a role at Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
Liverpool issued a statement confirming that Hughes had communicated his desire to embark on a new chapter in his career. The club extended their best wishes to him for the future, acknowledging his contributions during his tenure.
🔴 Two years at Liverpool
Hughes joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024, following a decade-long spell at Bournemouth, where he was appointed by Michael Edwards, the club’s then-football director from Fenway Sports Group.
One of Hughes’ landmark decisions was bringing Arne Slot on board as head coach, which proved fruitful as Liverpool clinched the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season and subsequently secured a spot in the Champions League.
However, his second season was considerably more challenging. After Slot's departure, Hughes played a pivotal role in promoting his former Bournemouth colleague Andoni Iraola as the new head coach of the Reds.

During Hughes’ time at the helm, Liverpool splashed around £670 million on transfers. Notable signings under his watch included Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Bradley Barcola, with Isak’s transfer setting a British record at roughly £125 million.
Hughes concluded his final transfer window in charge as Liverpool's sporting director before making the decision to leave the club.
