Chelsea’s Pep Chavarria has shared his thoughts on the 2-2 draw at home against Hull City in the fourth round of the Premier League.
Manager Xabi Alonso introduced the 28-year-old Spaniard after half-time, replacing Yorrel Hato. This marked Chavarria’s longest stint on the pitch this season, having previously only appeared as a substitute in the first four matches.
Following the final whistle, Chavarria emphasised the urgent need to address defensive frailties:
It was a challenging game. Hull City are undoubtedly a very good team. When we scored the first goal, we were in complete control, but after they equalised, they played smartly. Our side is very spirited; we’ve always got energy for pushing forward, but we must defend better — that’s the key.
Hull rely on long passes and direct play from one box to another. It's tough because one moment you're in their box, and the next you're defending in your own. They love to counterattack, and we need to neutralise those threats.
I think overall the team performed decently, but we conceded twice, so we need to work hard to correct those issues. In the second half, we improved our energy and intensity in aerial duels and challenges.
We have immense talent in our squad, and playing alongside top-level players is a true pleasure; there are plenty of alternatives and tactical solutions. It’s a dream for me to be here, and I’m incredibly happy. I feel great and believe my adaptation is going very well.
