One of the most tense episodes reveals a brutal confrontation between Guardiola and then-captain Kyle Walker following a defeat to Liverpool. Walker felt he had been unfairly made a scapegoat and confronted Guardiola directly:
Your name comes up at every meeting. Every single analysis mentions me. You keep dragging me into this.
Chosen as captain by a vote from his teammates, Walker alleged that Guardiola was reluctant to see him wearing the armband. Pep urged the defender not to take work-related criticisms personally, but the conversation escalated into a raw emotional exchange. With his voice trembling, Guardiola expressed his reasons for extending his contract during a dark period:
