Paul Pogba has urged Manchester United's hierarchy not to make hasty decisions regarding Michael Carrick. The former midfielder believes his ex-teammate needs time, despite a rocky start to the season.
United have secured just one win from their opening six Premier League matches and already saw their League Cup campaign cut short following a defeat to Brighton.
The solitary triumph came against Ipswich Town, while the team has dropped points against Hull City, Everton, Manchester City, Fulham, and Tottenham.
In their latest outing against Spurs, United managed only a 1-1 draw, failing to hold onto their lead even after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off.
With these disappointing results, pressure is mounting on Carrick. However, Pogba insists it's too early to make any firm conclusions.
He stated:
This is just the start of the season. There’s hardly anything to discuss — it’s a long way to go.
Last season, when he came in, everyone said he was the one to turn things around.
Now, when results aren’t coming, there are talks about him being too young.
Pogba believes opinions on Carrick will shift rapidly if results improve.
In football, everything can change very quickly.
They just need some time, and everything will be alright.
Pogba knows Carrick well from their time together at United, where Carrick was a player before joining the coaching staff.
The 33-year-old Frenchman is currently without a club after leaving Monaco, where injuries limited him to just six appearances last season. In August, the two parties mutually terminated his two-year contract.
During the Singapore Grand Prix, Pogba was also asked about Manchester City's financial troubles.
During his second spell at United, the team finished second in the Premier League twice — under Jose Mourinho in 2018 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.
Reacting to the situation with a touch of humour, Pogba quipped:
Let’s hope this whole affair doesn’t harm the Premier League.
And who knows, we might end up with two league titles after all this.
This comes as Manchester City continues to contest the verdict handed down, with final sanctions yet to be decided.
