Manchester United manager Michael Carrick believes that Patrick Dorgu could provide a solid option at left-back.
This summer, the club was weighing up a move to strengthen this area but ultimately decided against signing a competitor for Luke Shaw.
Speaking about Dorgu, Carrick remarked:
Patrick can definitely play there. He has played in that position before, without a doubt. I'm not suggesting he isn't capable; it's just that since I've been here, we've used him differently.
The 21-year-old Dorgu has predominantly played as a left wing-back in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation. Carrick highlighted that the Dane's versatility allows him to operate in various roles:
Unfortunately, he has been out injured for quite a while. So for me, his return feels almost like getting a new player, in a sense even like a new signing. He brings so much to our team.
He has played on the right for Denmark and scored a brilliant goal this summer while playing in a more attacking position. He can also play as a left-back.
Last season, Shaw participated in all 38 Premier League matches for the first time since joining Manchester United in 2014. With the team returning to the Champions League, the depth of the squad on the left defensive flank remained one of the key questions during the summer transfer window.
