Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the club should have parted ways with Wataru Endo during the summer transfer window. He argues that the 33-year-old midfielder has virtually no chance of getting game time under Andoni Iraola.
Endo has not been included in Liverpool's squad for the Champions League group stage. Federico Chiesa also finds himself left out of the European squad.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher stated:
There are two players at Liverpool who just won’t see the pitch. With all the squad restrictions—you can only include 17 players who aren’t considered homegrown from English clubs—it’s tough.
They’ve got Chiesa and Endo. It feels like they won’t kick a ball at all.
Endo should have been let go. He did well at Liverpool and became something of a cult figure for the fans.
The Japanese player joined Liverpool from Stuttgart in the summer of 2023, regularly featuring under Jurgen Klopp. However, his playing time has significantly dwindled following the arrival of Arne Slot, with injuries further complicating his situation last season.
So far, under Iraola, Endo has also failed to secure any game time and is now excluded from the squad for the first half of the Champions League.
