Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on whether Michael Carrick has sufficiently demonstrated his readiness to manage Manchester United for the long haul. Despite the club finishing third in the Premier League and securing a place in the Champions League last season, the former Liverpool defender feels Carrick's status as head coach is still uncertain.
Carrick secured a permanent contract following a successful stint as interim manager, yet Carragher pointed out that a figure with such a resume would likely not be considered by other top European clubs.
In his column for the Daily Telegraph, Carragher wrote:
For many, it feels as though Carrick remains a temporary solution, albeit now without the interim label. He has been handed the keys to Old Trafford until the opportunity arises to bring in a super coach in the summer of 2027.
Carrick, of course, does not see things this way, but there are particular perceptions he will find hard to shake off.
Carrick's upcoming match against Manchester City presents his most significant test of the season thus far. On Sunday, Manchester United will host the Premier League leaders at Old Trafford.
