Aston Villa midfielder Leon Goretzka could be set to make his long-awaited debut after recovering from injury. Former Birmingham scout Brian King is confident that the experienced German can become a pivotal player for Unai Emery's side.
Goretzka joined Aston Villa this summer on a free transfer after an illustrious eight-year spell at Bayern Munich. He signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional season, but has yet to feature in an official match due to injury woes.
There are optimistic signs that he could return to action next week, coinciding with Villa's Champions League clash against Fenerbahce.
According to King, Goretzka's value extends far beyond his abilities on the pitch; he brings a wealth of experience that Villa sorely needs at the moment.
Speaking to Football Insider, King emphasised:
At 31, he's won nearly everything. When you acquire a player like him, you're primarily getting his experience.
Usually, you’d have to shell out big bucks for such a talent, but he’s arrived from Bayern for free. It’s a fantastic addition in terms of experience.
This summer, Aston Villa endured the loss of Youri Tielemans, who joined Manchester United, while Amadou Onana's injury has forced Emery to explore different midfield combinations.
Last Saturday, the Birmingham side drew 2-2 with Brentford, conceding shortly after taking the lead. King believes that having Goretzka in the squad could help the team navigate these tight situations with more confidence.
The expert added:
Onana is still sidelined, which is a massive loss, especially following Tielemans' departure.
If Goretzka returns fit, he can play a huge role at the club, both now and over the next couple of seasons.
Goretzka's versatility will also be a significant asset to Emery. He can operate effectively in both defensive midfield and more advanced roles.
During his last season at Bayern, he frequently played higher up the pitch but possesses enough experience to handle defensive responsibilities as well.
In the match against Brentford, Emery deployed Boubacar Kamara, Joao Gomes, and Emiliano Buendia in midfield, later substituting in Ibrahim Mbaye.
Goretzka's return would broaden the manager's options and introduce a player who is accustomed to competing for major trophies.
The main concern now revolves around the German's fitness. If he can steer clear of further injuries, his acquisition could prove to be one of the best free signings of the summer for Aston Villa.
