Alan Shearer believes that Moises Caicedo played a crucial role in Chelsea's 5-1 drubbing of Bournemouth. The expert especially highlighted the Ecuadorian's off-the-ball work and his ability to launch attacks swiftly after regaining possession.
Before this match, Caicedo had seen just 14 minutes of action this season due to a calf injury, but his return showcased just how vital he is to Xabi Alonso's side.
Shearer commented:
The attacking trio was once again superb, as was Jordan Henderson. But Caicedo changes this team significantly.
He brings experience, reliability in the middle, and after winning the ball back, he makes simple but highly effective plays.
The first goal for Chelsea stemmed directly from Caicedo's involvement. He won the ball and swiftly directed the attack forward, allowing Henderson to exploit the space.
Shearer noted:
His first thought is to play it forward.
Henderson can push higher without fear because he knows Caicedo is behind him providing the necessary cover.
Caicedo was also instrumental in the second goal, once again winning the ball in the midfield and initiating the attack finished off by Morgan Rogers.
What impressed Shearer the most was Caicedo's willingness to do the dirty work often overlooked.
He reads the game excellently, senses danger, intercepts passes, and presses effectively.
Sometimes a little dirty work is required—he doesn’t shy away from that. A player like him is essential for every team.
Caicedo also played a part leading up to the fifth goal, intercepting a pass that sparked an attack, ultimately earning Chelsea a free kick that Henderson converted for his second goal of the match.
Shearer added:
We talk a lot about Chelsea's attack, and rightly so. Henderson had a great game too. But for me, Caicedo was just phenomenal.
This victory propelled Chelsea up to fifth place in the Premier League. Next up, Xabi Alonso's men will face Everton away from home in their upcoming match.
