Yap Stam is convinced that Carlos Baleba can step up and become a crucial player for Manchester United this season. The former defender thinks the 22-year-old Cameroonian has the ability to fill the gap left by Casemiro's departure in the summer.
Baleba joined United from Brighton for a hefty £70 million, but his early months have been marred by injury issues, sidelining him from contributing significantly to Michael Carrick's side.
He made his long-awaited debut for the Red Devils last weekend against Tottenham, coming on for the final 30 minutes of a match that ended 1-1.
Stam believes Baleba possesses the qualities that United desperately need in midfield right now.
He remarked:
I really like Carlos Baleba, who has joined from Brighton.
I think he can replace Casemiro.
According to the Dutchman, United require a midfielder who can put in a substantial shift off the ball while also initiating attacks effectively.
The team needs a player in good physical shape, with energy to cover large areas of the pitch.
At the same time, he needs to be comfortable on the ball. Baleba has all of that.
Following Casemiro’s exit, the defensive midfield role has become one of the most talked-about topics regarding United's squad.
Carrick might now be inclined to offer Baleba another chance in the Champions League – with a match against Atletico looming.
If the Cameroonian finds his rhythm after injury, Stam anticipates that his role within the team will only grow.
