VAR overturned a penalty awarded to Liverpool against Brentford after replays showed Dango Ouattara made clean contact with the ball before fouling Alexis Mac Allister.

During a Premier League match in the 2026/27 season at Gtech Community Stadium, Liverpool players were expecting a penalty against Brentford.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister found himself in a promising position inside the penalty area when he went down following a challenge from Dango Ouattara. The Argentine midfielder collapsed in apparent pain, prompting the match referee to point to the spot, giving the Reds a golden opportunity to take the lead.

However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) soon intervened. The video officials advised the referee to review the incident on monitor screens, and after examining the replay, the referee concluded that the contact between the players was insufficient to warrant a foul. Moreover, it became clear that Ouattara had made contact with the ball before colliding with Liverpool's midfielder.

As a result, the initial decision was revoked, and the awarded penalty was nullified. To add insult to injury, just moments later, Liverpool conceded a goal.
