Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool's new stars to embrace the pressure and start delivering consistently on the big stage. With Mohamed Salah's recent exit, the team captain sees the greatest challenge as maintaining high performance levels every few days rather than just having the odd great game.
With Salah leaving the club as a free agent to join Trabzonspor, Liverpool is in the process of overhauling its attacking options.
Under the guidance of Andoni Iraola, the Reds have brought in several high-profile players to bolster their front line.
The Merseysiders forked out £105 million for Bradley Barcola from PSG this summer, following an investment of over £200 million on Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz the previous year.
This trio is starting to gel on the pitch, with Liverpool having lost only once across all competitions so far this season.
However, Van Dijk insists that the real test for these new leaders is just beginning.
He remarked:
I don’t think anyone can replicate what Mo has done over the years.
The same can be said for Firmino and Mane.
The Liverpool captain is hopeful that the current attacking contingent can forge its own successful narrative over time.
I hope we can achieve something similar, and that’s what we’re all working towards.
But at some point, the club has to move on.
According to Van Dijk, the responsibility now shifts to those players who are expected to fill the void left by departing stars.
These players need to show they can deliver results every three or four days.
We all recognise their quality, but the most crucial aspect is demonstrating it consistently.
Ultimately, stability will become the key demand for Barcola, Isak, and Wirtz as Liverpool seeks to forge a new identity post-Salah.
