Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has effectively opened the door for midfielder Martin Subimendi's departure, as Real Madrid shows significant interest in the player.
Despite being a key player in last season's title win, Subimendi has found himself on the sidelines this Premier League campaign, failing to make a single start. In a recent match against Everton, which ended in a victory for the Gunners with goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes, Subimendi made an appearance only in the final ten minutes following his recovery from injury.
Arteta's thoughts on Subimendi's situation
Speaking about the midfielder's fitness and chances of reclaiming his starting spot, Arteta noted:
He had a few opportunities, then he got injured... From now on, he needs to earn the right to play. He has been exceptional regardless of the role he had to play, and I expect that from every player. Right now, he deserves more minutes on the pitch.
The manager also highlighted the expectations placed on central midfielders:
This applies to all midfielders. Martin has already scored a few goals, Bruno has done the same, and Declan too. We need them to have the freedom and, more importantly, the aggression to penetrate the box and create problems for the opposition depending on their positions.
Interest from Real Madrid and Chelsea
According to reports from Spain, if Subimendi continues to get minimal game time, he may seriously consider a winter transfer. In addition to Real Madrid, Chelsea is also monitoring the situation closely, although there have been no concrete official offers as of yet. The future developments will depend on the club hierarchy's decisions and the player's representatives.
