London's Tottenham have surpassed the €1 billion threshold in gross spending on incoming transfers since the summer of 2023. As reported by the analytics platform Transfermarkt, Spurs currently rank second among European clubs in terms of transfer outlay during this period.
Leading the continental rankings is Chelsea, who have splashed out €1.45 billion. Following Tottenham are Manchester City (€983 million), Paris Saint-Germain (€974 million), Manchester United (€882 million), and Arsenal (€864 million).
The substantial investments by Spurs are a response to a prolonged crisis in performance, with the team finishing 17th in the Premier League table in consecutive seasons, flirting dangerously with relegation. A major squad overhaul commenced and intensified with the arrival of head coach Roberto De Zerbi in the summer of 2026.
In the current summer transfer window, Tottenham has already spent over £300 million on gross acquisitions, marking the largest outlay in the club's history. The focus has been on bringing in players with Premier League experience to minimise adaptation times. Key additions to the squad include:
- Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United — a club record at £92.5 million plus up to £7.5 million in bonuses.
- Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United — for £85 million.
- Savio from Manchester City — an initial £75 million with potential to rise to £85 million through bonuses.
- Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton — for £52 million.
Additionally, experienced players Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka joined on free transfers. Previous significant investments for Tottenham since 2023 included the signings of Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, and Mickey van de Ven.
Despite selling Cristian Romero and Jed Spence, Spurs’ net spending remains incredibly high. Ahead of the transfer window closing in early September, De Zerbi is hoping to secure another forward, with his primary target being striker Omar Marmush. However, the season for this revamped squad kicked off with a heavy away defeat to Brentford, losing 0-3.
