Sunderland have splashed out €10 million on 20-year-old midfielder Jules Ahoka, who needed just two appearances for Antwerp to convince the English club of his potential.
Ahoka made the move to Belgium from Congolese side AK Normand in September 2025. Initially, he started with Antwerp's reserve team, making his first-team debut in May, where he played two matches as a central defender.
In August, new Antwerp boss Marvin Compper shifted Ahoka to his preferred position as a defensive midfielder.
The young talent played a full part in two league games, notching an assist in a victory against Beveren (2-1) and helping secure a solid 3-0 win over Kortrijk.
This impressive start was enough to catch Sunderland's eye, who had been tracking the midfielder closely. By August 24, Ahoka had officially signed for Sunderland, making the switch to the Stadium of Light.
Compper expressed his frustration over losing such a promising player.
The Antwerp manager stated:
He is progressing every day. Physically, he is very strong, and he is also getting better technically. He has the ability to become not just a squad player, but a key figure in the team.
Since joining Sunderland, Ahoka has already made his debut, featuring in a 1-0 victory in the EFL Cup against Hull City. However, in the Premier League and Europa League, manager Regis Le Bris has mainly kept him on the bench.
On the international stage, the midfielder continues to draw attention with his performances for the DR Congo U23 team.
Journalist Darius Chibangu believes Ahoka is ready to make a claim for a spot in the senior national team.
Chibangu remarked:
He is a true master of the midfield for Gi Bukasa's team. His technical skills, ability to control the game, and work ethic prove that Ahoka has all the qualities for a successful career.
Among the players in the youth national team, he is one of those knocking most insistently on the door of the main squad.
Chibangu also highlighted how quickly Ahoka managed to persuade Sunderland to invest serious money in him.
The journalist added:
His progress since moving to Europe is particularly impressive. Just two matches for Antwerp were enough to convince Sunderland to invest €10 million.
Now Ahoka must prove himself in English football. While he is still finding his feet in Le Bris’ team, his displays for the DR Congo U23 side provide hope for further development.
