Senne Lamens is frustrated that Manchester United let a win slip away against Tottenham. Holding the lead and playing with an extra man, they still conceded a late equaliser to Dominic Solanke.
The Belgian goalkeeper admitted that the match was challenging from the outset.
He stated:
Sometimes football can be cruel. There are a lot of ups and downs in games like this.
In the first half, we had to grind things out a bit. We didn’t look our best on the ball, but we stuck together and gave ourselves a chance to turn things around after the break.
In the second half, United took the lead thanks to a goal from Bryan Mbeumo and then gained a numerical advantage after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off.
Lamens believes that from that point onwards, the team should have taken complete control of the match.
When the opponent is down to ten men, you need to either score a quick second or at least prevent them from creating any chances.
We allowed them too much freedom. After that, it only takes a lucky bounce or one good pass, and they score. So, the feeling is very bitter.
Solanke's goal in stoppage time epitomised yet another instance of Manchester United failing to hold onto their advantage until the final whistle.
Lamens added:
It sometimes feels like these games just slip through your fingers, and in one or two moments, you lose control.
But it’s all too easy to say we were just unlucky. In reality, we should have killed the game off earlier and not put ourselves in a situation where the opponent even has a chance.
The keeper emphasised that the team needs to learn from this draw.
We have lessons to take away. Not everything was bad, far from it. But the way it ended leaves a very unpleasant feeling.
