Paul Merson continues to express scepticism regarding Manchester United's chances of finishing in the top five of the Premier League. The ex-Arsenal player argues that despite a summer shake-up, the club has not sufficiently resolved pressing problems within Michael Carrick's squad.
This summer, United made significant changes to their midfield following Casemiro's departure, bringing in Yuri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba. However, Merson feels the current squad lacks the depth required to compete on multiple fronts.
Ahead of the Manchester derby, the expert shared his views with Sky Sports:
United have the derby ahead, and their season is hanging in the balance right now. Win against City — brilliant. Lose, and it’s the same old story all over again.
I’ve said from the start that, in my opinion, United didn't have a great transfer window. The squad is not deep enough. They’re lacking that in many areas.
Merson is particularly concerned about United's defensive frailties, having conceded six goals in their opening three Premier League matches, and notably dropping points against Everton with a disappointing 2-2 draw after leading.
The pundit also took issue with Carrick's approach to holding onto leads:
If you're ahead, bring on another attacking player. You shouldn’t take off a forward and bring on a defender, allowing the opposition to pile the pressure on.
United almost invited their opponents to attack. A big team shouldn't play like that.
Merson underscored that his pre-season predictions remain unchanged despite the new campaign:
I’m worried. That’s why I didn’t include Manchester United in my top five before the season began. Nothing has changed for me since then.
After three matches, Carrick's team sits with one win, one draw, and one defeat. Their next challenge will be a crucial home derby against Manchester City.
