Patrice Evra expects Manchester United to make a strong comeback against Ipswich in their second Premier League match. The former United defender has backed his old club to secure a 3-1 victory, although he admitted that the first half could be difficult for Michael Carrick's team.
In their opening fixture, Manchester United suffered an unexpected 0-2 defeat against newly promoted Hull City. Despite dominating possession with 71%, the Red Devils failed to convert their chances.
Evra stated:
I believe Manchester United will beat Ipswich. However, they will have to grind through the first half, and in the end, they will win 3-1. I can’t see United losing two matches on the trot, even though it will be a tough and tricky game. So, no room for overconfidence.
He emphasised the importance of this match, saying:
There’s no margin for error. We can’t even think about losing. If we draw, just imagine the uproar! It’s moments like this that show how big a club it remains. When United loses, the world talks about it. When they win, it’s the same.
Evra expressed concern that another dropped point could reignite negativity around the club:
It feels like they’re up against the world. Winning is imperative. If we don’t get the win, all that negativity will resurface, and the team will have to carry it.
Regarding summer signings, Evra acknowledged United’s additions in midfield with Youri Tielemans, Andre Santos, and Carlos Baleba, but he feels the club still lacks a solid left-back.
He remarked:
The best left-back for United before me was Denis Irwin. Some might mention me, but no—Denis could play on both flanks, scored more, and was incredibly reliable. Since I left, about 20 players have tried to fill that position. No one has replaced me.
Evra also shared his thoughts on the title race. Despite years of ribbing Arsenal, he believes Mikel Arteta's side could clinch back-to-back Premier League titles.
Evra concluded:
I genuinely think Arsenal will win the title again. We can joke about it all we want, but I believe they’ll take home a second consecutive crown. I see no reasons why that shouldn’t happen.
