Eddie Howe tops Manchester United's shortlist to replace Carrick. Wilcox supports his candidacy, but there are backing for Nagelsmann, Emery, and Conte among the hierarchy.

Manchester United are increasingly leaning towards a managerial change, with Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle head coach, emerging as the frontrunner for the role, reports The i Paper. Michael Carrick, the current manager, is facing mounting pressure.

Sources indicate that Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football, is the main advocate for bringing Howe on board. Wilcox believes that the club needs a manager with considerable Premier League experience to turn the situation around. Interestingly, Howe himself is reportedly interested in a role at Old Trafford, despite initially intending to take a break from management.

Divided opinions in the hierarchy

Even though Howe is Wilcox's preferred choice, the search for a new manager is far from concluded, and there are differing opinions within the club.

Christopher Vivell, the head of recruitment, is backing Julian Nagelsmann's candidacy.

Unai Emery also has his supporters among some of the higher-ups at United, although his move from Aston Villa could require significant financial outlay.

The name of Antonio Conte has also been mentioned as a potential candidate; however, concerns remain about whether the Italian could effectively operate within the current structure of the club.
