Lothar Matthaus believes Chelsea could be interested in Florian Wirtz if his situation at Liverpool does not improve. The German has yet to meet expectations after his pricey transfer, and a return to London could see him reunite with Xabi Alonso.

Lothar Matthaus has suggested that Chelsea might be an attractive option for Florian Wirtz should Liverpool choose to sell him in 2027. The ex-Germany captain specifically mentioned the connection with Xabi Alonso, who is familiar with Wirtz's abilities from their days at Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer in the summer of 2025 for a hefty £125 million, but he has struggled to replicate the form that made him a star in the Bundesliga.

During his time on Merseyside, Wirtz has scored just seven goals in 56 appearances, and this season he has contributed only one goal in seven outings.

As Wirtz's difficulties continue, speculation over his future is intensifying, despite having more than three years left on his contract with Liverpool.

Bayern Munich is among the clubs monitoring his situation, although Matthaus expressed doubts about whether the Bavarians actually need Wirtz at this time.

He commented:

Looking at Bayern's attacking lineup, they already have Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz, as well as Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry.

I really don’t see where Wirtz could fit in. I don’t anticipate a realistic move to Bayern in the near future.

Matthaus did suggest that the tide could turn if Wirtz continues to face challenges at Liverpool.

If the criticism remains and he fails to rediscover the fluidity and freedom in his play that we were used to seeing, at some point, all parties might have to sit down and seek a solution.

Among the potential options, Matthaus singled out Chelsea.

There are clubs in Spain that might be interested in him. And there’s also Chelsea in England, where his former manager Xabi Alonso is currently at the helm.

Wirtz experienced one of the best periods of his career under Alonso, so a reunion makes sense given their previous rapport.

However, a potential transfer to Stamford Bridge isn’t guaranteed. Chelsea spent £138 million on Morgan Rogers in the summer, who plays in a similar position to Wirtz and has already notched up four goals and four assists in just eight games.

Furthermore, by 2027, the Blues may look to strengthen other areas of the midfield, with Alex Scott being one of the potential targets.
