Johnny Emerson has made a significant step in his return to full football, making his first start for Newcastle U21 in almost 18 months and contributing with two assists in a 4-1 thrashing of Luton reserves.
Once touted as one of the academy's brightest prospects, Emerson had even earned minutes with the first team during pre-season before injuries derailed his progress, including a hernia operation and a serious knee injury.
After a long and arduous recovery, he has finally returned to the pitch and wasted no time in making an impact, constantly threatening on the wing with his pace and quality crosses.
Following the match, Emerson expressed his relief:
It feels like a wall has come crashing down.
But I can't get ahead of myself. I'll take it one match and one training session at a time. The most important thing is to stay fit and continue helping the team.
The player also highlighted how crucial the club's support was during his recovery.
Everyone helped me. I spent the most time with physiotherapist Karl Nelson.
I also spoke with the sports psychologists because there were some really tough days. The people in the academy supported me incredibly.
According to Emerson, the infrastructure at Newcastle's academy has significantly improved since he joined at the age of 13.
Meanwhile, competition among young players is heating up. The likes of Alabi, Jayden Kuoosu, and Michael Mills are already getting playing time with U21, while the younger age groups consistently win tournaments.
Emerson finds this to be additional motivation:
Seeing U15 and U16 teams winning consistently is really nice. There’s a great positive vibe around the place.
The competition only drives you to work harder. Everyone in the squad is a good player, and you have to prove yourself in matches.
Especially inspiring for the youngsters is the approach of Matthias Jaissle towards youth integration.
During pre-season, the coach already provided opportunities for Mason Miley, Henry Johnson, Dylan Charlton, and Miodrag Pivas, and he's continued to involve young players in the senior squad.
Emerson added:
The timing of my return is almost perfect. A new manager has come in, and within the first week, he's started giving chances to young players.
This is a very good sign of what’s to come.
