Hull City's John Egan reflected on the goalless draw with Aston Villa in the third round of the Premier League.
'We're really pleased with the point. First and foremost, it was a good match defensively and yet another clean sheet. Both teams had their chances. Aston Villa are a very good side, but we created some opportunities too. I think we looked stronger towards the end, so overall, this is a very good point for us,' Egan stated.
This match marked Hull City's third consecutive game without conceding a goal. Egan emphasized that the foundation for their current defensive solidity was laid towards the end of last season when the team adopted a five-at-the-back system.
'A lot of hard work is put in on the training ground. We have many experienced players who have played a lot of matches. Moreover, the team really wants to work for each other and defend as a unit. Everything is going well so far, but we must continue to progress,' he added.
Egan also highlighted the significance of a strong start to the season for building the team's confidence following their promotion to the Premier League.
'It's a huge boost for our confidence. Winning the first game has given everyone belief. Now we need to keep using our strengths, play on the counter-attack, and defend well. We must draw confidence from every result and keep pushing forward.'
Ryan Giles, reflecting on the 5-4-1 system, shared how it has helped Hull City maintain their defensive integrity.
'It gives us a solid foundation. We have a big player in the centre, plenty of experience, and a very tight-knit group. Everything is working well together, and you can see that.'
Discussing his responsibilities, Giles mentioned the importance of getting forward to create opportunities from the flanks.
'At the end of the day, that's what I should be doing — getting forward and tracking back. I aim to give my all for the team and continue delivering crosses into the box.'
In the closing moments of the match, Giles made a dangerous delivery to Oli McBurnie, who unfortunately failed to convert the chance.
'I would have backed the big lad to score in that situation, but we'll forgive him this time. It was excellent team play. If we keep building our game on that foundation, everything will be alright.'
