Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has declared that Manchester City will struggle to secure Premier League glory in the absence of their key midfielder Rodri. This assessment comes despite a bright start from new midfielders Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez.
This past Sunday, the Citizens delivered a thrilling victory over Sunderland, winning 5-3 and topping the Premier League table.
However, during his podcast, Carragher stressed that he only viewed the Manchester club as favourites for the title before parting ways with their Spanish stalwart:
Before the season kicked off, I genuinely thought: if Manchester City kept hold of Rodri, they would win the title. We often talk about Pep Guardiola's exit, but new energy and freshness after his long tenure could be beneficial. But without Rodri, I don’t believe they can claim the championship.
That said, I must acknowledge: Elliot Anderson has started brilliantly, despite constant chatter regarding his price tag. We've also seen a strong addition in Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. The club has acquired two excellent players for the midfield. It’s possible that the midfield is even stronger now after the departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva — certainly younger and fresher. This duo is currently head and shoulders above the rest.
