15-Second Brief
Jordan Henderson, at 36 years old, scored two goals and assisted in Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth. Xabi Alonso praised the performance of the veteran, who is just beginning to make his mark at the club.

Xabi Alonso's Chelsea celebrated a thumping 5-1 victory against Bournemouth, with veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson stealing the show. The 36-year-old netted a brace and provided an assist, marking a stellar performance in just his second outing for the club.

Henderson wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, firing home his first Chelsea goal just 68 seconds into the match after receiving a clever pass from Cole Palmer.

Two minutes later, he turned provider, assisting Morgan Rogers, whose shot found the back of the net via a deflection off Antonio Silva. This rapid-fire contribution marks the second fastest combination of goals and assists by a single player in Premier League history.

Henderson completed his brace in the 70th minute with a beautifully executed free kick. The Chelsea fans were clearly enamoured with the midfielder’s display, calling for him to shoot on sight in hopes of witnessing a hat-trick.

Post-match, Alonso reflected on the summer signing of Henderson, who left Brentford as a free agent. The Chelsea manager explained:

We signed him for all the qualities he brings to the team. If he can score two beautiful goals as he did today, then we’re more than happy.

Besides the goals, he contributed significantly, constantly engaging in the game, guiding his teammates, and commanding the midfield. It was a fantastic display.

This match was only Henderson’s second for Chelsea, and Alonso is hopeful that his experience will help stabilise the young side.

The win comes as a relief after three winless games, including a painful 3-0 defeat to Brentford. Alonso expressed satisfaction with his players' performance, stating:

We played a very cohesive match, controlling the game for most of it while maintaining a good balance. I’m pleased with the team's display. There are many positives we can build upon moving forward.

Interestingly, Alonso himself did not foresee the two goals in the opening three minutes, jokingly adding:

We always aim to start matches energetically, but I can’t explain such a quick start. I had no part in that.

My teams have never scored so quickly before. Let’s see if we can keep this up, although perhaps I'd prefer the first goal to come in the dying minutes!

Chelsea also had good news off the pitch, with Cole Palmer's contract extension until 2034 confirmed. Alonso highlighted the importance of retaining one of the team's key players:

I’m very happy for him and for the club. I'm sure the fans are delighted to see Cole here for many years to come.

He’s crucial to what we’re building. In creating a young team, keeping your best players for the long haul is essential. The longer Palmer stays with us, the better.

After a convincing win over Bournemouth, Alonso had several reasons to be optimistic. However, the evening truly belonged to Henderson, who, in only his second match for Chelsea, showcased exactly why his manager was so eager to bring him on board.
