Alvaro Arbeloa has responded to criticism following yet another disappointing match for Fulham. The London side fell to Ipswich 2-1, conceding two late goals, which has extended their winless streak in the Premier League to six matches.
Fulham took the lead on 55 minutes thanks to Ryan Sessegnon and was close to achieving Arbeloa's first Premier League win.
However, in the 88th minute, Abdul Watara equalised with a long-range effort, and in stoppage time, Dara O'Shea secured victory for Ipswich.
After the match, Arbeloa stated he doesn't fear the prospect of dismissal:
I never worry about my position. I don’t feel fear. If you are afraid, you can’t be a manager.
You need to work, make decisions, and show confidence to the players.
This isn’t about me, it’s about the situation at Fulham. That’s what matters. It’s only six matches in, but we certainly need points.
For the team, this marks their fourth defeat in six league encounters. A significant issue has been the late goals conceded: Fulham has let in goals after the 75th minute against Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, and now Ipswich.
For Arbeloa, this current role represents his first substantial experience in the Premier League. Previously, he had a brief spell managing Real Madrid and worked with the club's reserve team.
The 43-year-old Spaniard, however, insists that pressure is nothing new to him.
He added:
Could I not handle the pressure? No. Perhaps you just don't know me well enough. I played for the best club in the world and managed the best club in the world.
Pressure has been a part of my life since I was a child.
In football, it’s normal—for players, managers, and everyone around the team. For me, pressure is important, and I enjoy it.
Despite Arbeloa's confidence, Fulham's situation remains dire. The team finds itself in the relegation zone and has yet to secure a Premier League victory under the Spanish boss.
