Danny Welbeck has described his move to Chelsea as a special milestone at this stage of his career. The 35-year-old striker highlighted the honour of becoming part of the ambitious project at the London club.
Welbeck joined Chelsea this summer after his stint with Brighton. Despite his age, the forward quickly made his mark by scoring in his debut match for his new club.
His first appearance came in the EFL Cup against Luton Town, where he opened the scoring early in the second half with a header from a Malo Gusto cross. Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory, progressing to the next round where they will face Leeds.
“It was really nice to score. It’s a good start, and I want to keep improving. This was my debut at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea, so the moment was really special. Starting with a goal was incredibly pleasing,” Welbeck shared in the club's official programme.
The transition to Chelsea marks a new phase in the English forward's career. Welbeck acknowledges the stature of the club and sees the chance to play for Chelsea as a significant privilege.
“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to join Chelsea. It’s such a big club. At this point in my career, it’s a massive step. I’m really excited about the chance to be part of this project. It’s thrilling, and I think we can create something special here,” Welbeck noted.
Refusing to see his age as a limitation, Welbeck emphasised that he continues to feel physically ready and aims to prove his worth on the pitch.
“There’s a lot of talk about my age, but it’s just talk. I’m here to keep moving forward and getting better. I feel really good—physically ready and strong. Last season, I had the best goal tally of my career, and I’m ready to continue,” he added.
In the 2025/26 season, Welbeck scored 13 goals in the Premier League for Brighton, aiding the team in qualifying for European competitions. Now, his experience could be crucial for Chelsea, as they look to blend young talent with seasoned players under the management of Xabi Alonso.
With another EFL Cup tie against Leeds on the horizon, Welbeck could have another opportunity to take to the field and build on his successful start with the new team.
