Just before the kickoff in the second round of the League Cup against Luton Town on Thursday evening, it was announced that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has signed for Chelsea.
As the summer transfer window approached, fans were vocal about the need to bolster the goalkeeper position. Robert Sanchez had failed to prove himself as a reliable number one since his move from Brighton. Last season, Liam Rosenior even opted to drop the Spaniard in favour of Philip Jorgensen. Initially, Xabi Alonso had intended to back Sanchez amidst competition from young Mike Penders, who started against Luton Town. However, two costly errors from Sanchez in the Monday match against Fulham prompted Chelsea’s hierarchy to act swiftly.
Chelsea capitalised on Martinez's situation at the Birmingham club to secure a remarkably favourable deal. Insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the financial details:
Chelsea has signed Martinez for £7.5 million on a two-year deal until June 2028, with an option to extend until 2029.
In parallel, the London club is also close to finalising the transfer of Onest Ahanor for £34 million. Including Martinez and Ahanor, Chelsea's tally of new signings this summer will rise to 13 players, with total expenditure now exceeding £400 million. Should Enzo Fernandez depart, the club may consider bringing in another midfielder.

Robert Sanchez has not looked convincing. There have always been debates about the need for Chelsea to elevate their quality in this position. Emiliano Martinez has been heavily linked with the move – I believe he will be a significant upgrade.
