Chelsea are interested in Atletico midfielder Pablo Barrios. The London club could offer €100 million in January, with Xabi Alonso viewing the Spaniard as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea are gearing up for an active winter transfer window and are preparing a €100 million offer for Atletico midfielder Pablo Barrios.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, the London club is on the hunt for a replacement for Enzo Fernandez following his switch to Manchester City.

The situation surrounding Fernandez changed dramatically in the closing hours of the summer transfer window. Chelsea agreed to let him depart, while their pursuit of Monaco midfielder Lamin Kamara as a replacement fell through when the French club opted not to release the Senegalese player.

This left the Londoners short of options in central midfield.

Now, Chelsea are determined to address this issue in January, with Barrios emerging as a prime target — the 23-year-old Spanish midfielder from Atletico.

Reports indicate that Xabi Alonso views Barrios as the ideal fit for his system, believing he can step into the void left by Fernandez.

Chelsea particularly admire Barrios' blend of physicality and technical skill, believing he could complement Moises Caicedo in midfield by adding creativity while retaining the necessary physical presence.

However, negotiating with Atletico will be a tall order. Barrios is a vital cog in Diego Simeone's team, and his contract includes a staggering release clause set at €500 million.

Last season marked a pivotal period for the Spaniard as he solidified his place in the squad, though a hamstring injury prevented him from contributing late in the season and robbed him of a chance to represent his country at the World Cup.

Despite the hefty price tag, Chelsea are seriously weighing up a sizable offer come January. For now, plans and potential propositions are in motion rather than an agreed deal between clubs.
