Italian football icon Alessandro Del Piero had high praise for Arsenal following their Champions League triumph over Napoli. Mikel Arteta's team secured a 1-0 victory in Naples, courtesy of a second-half goal from Martin Odegaard.
Del Piero highlighted that the difference between the two teams became particularly evident as the match drew to a close. He believes Arsenal managed the ball much better, allowing them to conserve energy thanks to their playing style.
On Sky Sports Italia, Del Piero stated:
By the 80th minute, it was Napoli who were tiring, not Arsenal, because Arsenal had more control of the ball — a result of their style of play.
Players like Odegaard thrive in these kinds of matches, especially after last season's excellent form. The psychological factor also plays a role here.
Saka and other Arsenal wingers could attack with fresh legs, while Napoli players had to chase the ball for three minutes and then quickly transition to launching their own attacks.
Del Piero emphasised that fatigue wasn't the only factor at play:
It’s not just about fatigue. The style of play, player positioning, confidence, and, on the other hand, the quality of more established players on the bench matter significantly.
Arteta also had the luxury of strengthening his side during the match: in the second half, he brought on Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz, Bruno Guimaraes, and Christos Tsolis.
For Arsenal, the victory in Naples signifies a strong start to their Champions League campaign following their run to the final last season.
