In what could be a pivotal match for Chelsea, head coach Xabi Alonso has announced that, contrary to some fears, none of his players are officially out ahead of their Friday evening clash with Brentford. Decisions regarding the fitness of key players, including Joao Pedro, will hinge on the outcome of the final training session.
After a narrow defeat to Arsenal, where they lost 2-1, and a frustrating draw with Hull City, Chelsea will be looking to get their season back on track at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Joao Pedro’s hopes of a comeback
Having missed training over the weekend and not receiving a call-up to the Brazil national team, there were concerns surrounding Joao Pedro’s fitness. However, Alonso has not dismissed the possibility of the forward featuring in Friday's encounter.
“When it comes to injuries and the squad, today is our last training session. No one is ruled out for Friday. We will wait until tomorrow and make our final decision.”
When asked about Pedro’s readiness, Alonso said:
“Tomorrow we’ll see if he’s ready to play, and we will make a decision.”
Alonso also noted that Pedro has moved on from his disappointment of missing out on national selection.
“No, he’s already left the summer and the World Cup behind. He’s very eager to have a great season. The summer is far behind us.”
Updates on James and Caicedo
Alonso provided insights into the fitness of two other crucial players.
Addressing the situation regarding Reece James, Alonso explained:
“No, that was just a decision for Tuesday. Tomorrow we will decide.”
As for Moises Caicedo, clarity will emerge following the next training session:
“He’s getting closer, and tomorrow we will make a final decision.”
Thus, the full Chelsea squad for the Brentford match will be determined just before kick-off.
Alonso cautious about Arsenal's dominance
After four matches, Chelsea find themselves trailing the reigning champions by five points. When asked to assess whether Arsenal seem invincible, Alonso urged caution.
“It’s too early to say. Arsenal and Manchester City have won all their matches, but there are still many games to play.”
He highlighted the rigorous nature of competing for the title:
“You understand how difficult it is to win. If you're not at your best level, you get punished.”
Alonso comments on changes in club hierarchy
During the press conference, Alonso was also asked about the agreement for Todd Boehly and Mark Walter to sell their stakes in Chelsea to the principal shareholder of Clearlake Capital.
The coach expressed gratitude for the previous ownership and referenced his positive relationship with Behdad Eghbali:
“I think today is an important day for the club, with significant changes in the structure. I want to thank the previous owners for what they have done. I know they played an important role.”
Alonso added:
“It’s good that Behdad now has full control. I have a good relationship with Behdad. He spoke with me to convince me to join the club. We’re continuing to move forward together.”
Yet, the manager reminded everyone that building a competitive project takes time:
