Chelsea made a move for 18-year-old defender Melvin Gomes of Monaco, but the player has chosen to continue his career with the French outfit. The Londoners put together a specific contract offer for the talented youngster.
According to L'Equipe, Chelsea's interest in Gomes was genuine, yet the defender is not considering a move to England at this stage of his career. He is set to sign his first professional contract with Monaco in the near future, which will span three years.
Born in Marseille, Gomes joined Monaco's academy in 2023 after leaving SC Air Bel. Initially, he played for the under-17s, before moving up to the U19s, and this summer, he stepped up to the U21 team.
Primarily a central defender, Gomes is also capable of playing as a right-back if needed. He has represented France at both the U18 and U19 levels.
L'Equipe highlights that Gomes is viewed as one of the most promising young defenders in the French market. Although he has turned Chelsea down, the Blues may still keep an eye on his development at Monaco.
This is the second instance involving a Monaco player for Chelsea in recent times. At the end of the summer transfer window, the club attempted to secure Lamina Kamara, but that deal fell through in the final hours of the deadline.
