James McConnell made his first start for Liverpool this season in the League Cup match against Tottenham. The 22-year-old midfielder shared his feelings about playing as a number ten and joked about his age compared to his much younger teammates.

James McConnell made his first start of the season for Liverpool, taking up an unfamiliar number ten position in the League Cup win against Tottenham (3-1).

I enjoy playing there; that's where I started out in my youth. Obviously, it’s a bit different now, and there are things I haven’t done in a while because I haven’t played there, but it’s nice.

My goal this season was to get playing time, and it’s clear that being in a team like this makes it tough... we managed well, and hopefully, we’ll get another chance.

At 22, McConnell commented with humour about his younger teammates, Lewis Kumas and Rio Nguema.

I’m not even sure if I’m still young; some of these guys are just so young!

Fellow midfielder Dominic Szoboszlai also praised the performance of the reserves, insisting that both McConnell and Kumas fully deserve their opportunities.
