15-Second Brief
The Premier League table would see Arsenal at the top and Everton leaping into the top four if Manchester City were excluded. Tottenham would be near the relegation zone, with updated goal differences for various teams.

As Manchester City's future remains uncertain, the possibility of their total exclusion from the Premier League mid-season is gaining traction. Various clubs are calling for any disciplinary action to be enforced before the season’s end, whether that be fines, transfer restrictions, point deductions, or outright removal from the league.

There have been precedents in English football for clubs being expelled due to financial breaches, such as Bury and Maidstone United, although in those instances, the teams had not played a single match of their respective seasons. A similar move in the top flight would be unprecedented, with direct consequences for all other nineteen teams.

The Legal Framework: The Impact of Rule C.15

If Manchester City are indeed expelled during the current campaign, Rule C.15 of the Premier League regulations would come into play. Under this rule, all recorded results involving the club would be completely nullified from the official league table, and the number of relegation spots would decrease by one. Conversely, if the decision is made post-season, Rule C.15 is applied differently, and completed round results would not be erased.

Given that City have won every match since the start of the season, no other club would lose any points from the nullification of their results. Consequently, every team would move up exactly one position in the standings.

Updated Premier League Table

Position Club Games Wins Draws Losses Goals For Goals Against Goal Difference Points
1 Arsenal 6 5 0 1 10 5 +5 15
2 Brighton 6 4 1 1 18 5 +13 13
3 Brentford 6 2 4 0 12 6 +6 10
4 Everton 6 2 4 0 8 5 +3 10
5 Chelsea 6 3 1 2 15 13 +2 10
6 Leeds 6 2 3 1 8 5 +3 9
7 Liverpool 5 2 3 0 7 4 +3 9
8 Hull City 6 2 3 1 8 6 +2 9
9 Ipswich 6 3 0 3 9 12 -3 9
10 Newcastle 5 2 2 1 9 9 0 8
11 Crystal Palace 5 2 1 2 8 8 0 7
12 Man Utd 5 1 3 1 9 8 +1 6
13 Nottingham Forest 6 1 2 3 5 8 -3 5
14 Aston Villa 6 1 2 3 6 11 -5 5
15 Sunderland 5 1 1 3 3 7 -4 4
16 Bournemouth 5 0 3 2 6 11 -5 3
17 Tottenham 6 0 3 3 3 9 -6 3
18 Coventry 4 1 0 3 1 9 -8 3
19 Fulham 6 0 2 4 6 10 -4 2

This reshuffling means Arsenal sits top of the league, while Everton surprisingly finds themselves in the Champions League spots at fourth place. At the other end, Tottenham is perilously close to the relegation zone, with Coventry and Fulham propping up the table.

Adjustment of Goals Scored and Conceded

The annulment of Manchester City's statistics affects the goal difference for rival teams in unique ways:

  • Sunderland would wipe off five conceded goals but lose three of their own;
  • Liverpool would remove three unanswered goals conceded at Anfield;
  • Manchester United and Coventry would improve their goal difference by one goal from erased conceded goals without losing any scored;
  • Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, who scored in their matches against City, would also benefit from an improved goal balance.

Furthermore, this exclusion would impact the League Cup, with Norwich or Brighton set to benefit. Should the EFL decide to reinstate Norwich, who suffered a 5-0 defeat at the Etihad, they would face Brighton, or Brighton would enter the next round automatically without having to play.
