Ruud Gullit believes Manchester United should retain faith in Michael Carrick despite increasing pressure. Following a defeat to Atletico, the team's winless streak has now extended to five matches.
In their Champions League encounter, United fell to a 2-0 defeat against the Madrid side, with Carrick acknowledging the players are struggling to cope during this difficult period.
The last time the team enjoyed victory was on September 10 – a match against Sabah at Old Trafford.
Amidst these disappointing results, tension is rising within the club. Lisandro Martinez voiced his frustrations about recent happenings post the Atletico game, echoing the sentiments of some teammates who share his discontent.
However, Gullit insists that a change in manager won't resolve the core issues at hand.
He stated:
The most important thing Manchester United needs to show now is patience.
It's quite simple: they no longer have the best players in the Premier League.
The Dutchman believes the club lost ground in the race for top talent several years ago.
The best players are currently playing for other teams.
United missed their chance around five or six years ago.
Gullit specifically highlighted Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City as clubs that have attracted more top-level players during this timeframe.
It will take time for them to sort things out and get back to a level where they can realistically contend for the title.
Right now, there are simply too many teams that are stronger and of higher quality.
Still, Gullit reminded everyone that Carrick managed to achieve significant progress last season, guiding Manchester United back into the Champions League.
Now the manager must quickly turn the team's fortunes around, with upcoming fixtures against Leeds followed by a clash with Como in the Champions League.
