Former sporting director Richard Hughes spent £700 million at Liverpool, but Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Bradley Barcola are disappointing. Julian Ward must restore the club's astute transfer policies reminiscent of Jürgen Klopp's era.

Richard Hughes spent just two full seasons at Liverpool as sporting director but left behind a mixed legacy. Over five transfer windows, the club splurged more than £700 million.

During his tenure, the Merseysiders clinched a Premier League title; however, many believe the team has taken a step back. Now it falls to Julian Ward to clean up the mess and reshape the club's future.

The club brought in three players costing over £110 million each, but none seem to be the standout performers even in Andoni Iraola's side.

Florian Wirtz has underwhelmed since his move from Bayer Leverkusen. Alexander Isak has shown improvement following a severe leg injury sustained under Arne Slot but is still far from the form he showcased during his time at Newcastle. Meanwhile, Bradley Barcola has yet to justify his status as the third most expensive player in league history.

Under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool was known for its savvy spending. Players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson commanded hefty fees but became the best in the world in their positions almost immediately.

The Liverpool hierarchy must learn from this experience and abandon the Hughes strategy. A return to signing proven players at reasonable prices will help the club compete for all trophies again without the risk of astronomical spending.
