Nottingham Forest legend Des Walker commented on Neco Williams' performance as a left-back. The expert rates the Welshman as the team's best player but advises Oliver Glasner to sign a proper left-footer during the January transfer window.

Wales international Neco Williams joined Nottingham Forest in 2022, initially playing as a right-back.

However, he was later moved to the problematic left flank. As a right-footed player, this position doesn’t come naturally, which can impact the team’s tactical balance when transitioning out of defence.

Despite this, the Welshman has managed to rise to the challenge. Club legend Des Walker weighed in on whether Nottingham Forest should seek a new left-back during the January transfer window.

“I would do it, 100 percent. But I have to say, Neco has probably been the best player for Forest over the last 18 months, so he finds a way. He brings energy to the team. Andreas Breme was a right-footed left-back, and he was world-class, so it's definitely something you can live with.”

“But I prefer when a left-footer plays there because it opens up the field. If a right-footer is on the left and shifts the ball to their right foot, the opponent can close them down and effectively cut off a third of the pitch. It’s easier to get the ball back upfield. A left-footer can open up, and suddenly the entire game expands. That said, Neco has been the best player for Forest. He looks more confident on the left than he does on the right.”

“I remember when he played against Liverpool a couple of years ago, facing Salah on the left, and Salah barely touched the ball. Neco was magnificent. Since that day, I think he has improved and become their most consistent player.”

“On the right, I’m not saying he did anything wrong, but he didn’t stand out as much. On the left flank, he brings so much energy, drive, and passion. However, playing as a wing-back in a back three is a bit different because you start much wider. Sometimes, you need that quality from a natural left-footer, where you’re nearly standing on the touchline. I haven’t seen him play enough in that position to determine if it truly suits him.”

This summer, Williams extended his contract with the club. Meanwhile, head coach Oliver Glasner continues to build the team and may insist on the purchase of a specialised left wing-back in the winter.
