Paul Scholes has voiced his discontent with the comments made by Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes following Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Hull City. The former United player believes their statements effectively undermined the work of Michael Carrick and his coaching staff.
Following the match, Fernandes lamented that the team had repeated the same errors from last season:
We made the same mistakes as last season. In every away game, we allow the opponent too much possession. We needed to press better, be more aggressive, and work on set pieces.
Shaw, on the other hand, addressed the team's preparation leading up to the match:
The whole team needs to play much better. I think we should have better analysed the strengths of the opponent in our preparations, particularly on set pieces.
This particular comment did not sit well with Scholes:
Luke Shaw always has something to say. That’s a dig at your coaching staff. That’s a dig at your manager. If one of your players says something like that, bloody hell, on Monday morning, you call him in and ask, 'What do you mean by that?'
It's not just about respect. Those words are a criticism of the manager and his team.
If we had said something like that about Sir Alex, saying we weren’t ready... bloody hell, he probably would have torn you apart in front of the whole team.
Scholes also critiqued Fernandes, suggesting that perhaps the captain should have chosen to “keep his mouth shut” following his own performance.
