15-Second Brief
Mikel Arteta recounted how on his first day at Arsenal in December 2019, he intentionally wrecked the club's office and gave the team two minutes to restore order.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed dramatic details from his first day at the club, which included a surprising tactic that could have jeopardised his entire career.

Upon arriving at the London Colney training complex, Arteta deliberately created chaos in the office, tossing computers, laptops, and cables onto the floor. Only after causing this disruption did he gather the shocked staff and players in the wrecked room.

In an interview with The Athletic, Arteta recalled what he said to the stunned group:

“I said, ‘Listen, this is what I've heard. I don't know if it's true. But from a variety of people, this is the sense — that’s how they feel working in this organisation. I'm here to help you enjoy your profession, your life, and the passion we all share. If you want me to help you with that, you have two minutes to tidy this place up and at least be ready to work together.’ And I walked out.”

Looking back, Arteta acknowledged the enormity of the risk he took:

“It could have been the end of my managerial career, because if things had stayed as they were, I simply wouldn't have this job anymore!”

However, his shocking wake-up call worked wonders: when he returned just two minutes later, the room was spotless, and everyone stood in absolute silence.

Years later, that bold move has paid off. Arsenal entered the 2026/27 season as Premier League champions and Champions League finalists, with only Bukayo Saka remaining from that original squad.

Arteta recently signed a new long-term contract with the club, calling it a tremendous privilege to shape his future with Arsenal and emphasising that their success is just the beginning of their shared journey.
