Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has dropped a bombshell, revealing that he intentionally refrained from blowing his whistle during matches. This admission has sent shockwaves through the football community and outraged supporters.
Dean hung up his whistle in 2023 after officiating a staggering 553 top-flight matches.
In a podcast with Jamie Vardy, Dean recounted a particularly mischievous moment on the pitch:
“There have been games where we joked, ‘Right, let’s see how long we can go without blowing the whistle.’ I did this a few times in the Premier League, obviously before VAR came into play. I managed 20 to 25 minutes without a whistle. Let them play, let them play.”
“In the Premier League, I also did another thing. I stood in the centre circle and kept an eye on how long I could remain there before having to leave. I just thought it would be a laugh. The linesmen would say, ‘You can’t do that.’ I replied, ‘I’ll give it a go.’ I just ran around but stayed in the middle. Once, in a match, I was in the centre circle for about 15 minutes without leaving.”
Dean’s revelations have unleashed a flood of fury on social media, with fans branding his behaviour as utterly disgraceful:
“Why are they laughing about this? It’s appalling from a supposed top referee. He’s just slacking off while fans are shelling out hundreds of pounds for a professional officiating service.”
“What else has gone on that he’s not telling us about? And they call themselves professionals.”
“I’ve watched loads of games where the referee was lenient and let play continue, only for a transitional phase to get interrupted by a tactical foul. No words… idiots!”
“I think it’s such a tough job, and they get blamed for everything, but how can you resolve to not blow the whistle?”
“Every fan should be refunded for this.”
“Stories like this only make things worse for today’s referees. More scrutiny, more pressure. Just astonishing.”
The Pro Referees Organisation declined to comment on the situation.
This isn't Dean's first scandal; he previously admitted to purposefully ignoring a VAR call during the Chelsea versus Tottenham match to protect a friend.
He revealed that he overlooked a hair-pulling foul on Marc Cucurella:
“I missed a ridiculous hair pull in the Chelsea vs Tottenham match, which in hindsight was foolish. It’s one of those instances where, if I could turn back time, I would have sent Anthony Taylor to the screen.”
“I think I realised if I sent him to the screen… he had warned both managers, it was a hell of a game, from box to box.”
“After that, I told Anthony: ‘I just didn’t want to send you to the screen after all that happened in the match.’”
“I didn’t want to call him over because he’s not just a referee, he’s a mate, and I didn't want to add more issues to what he already had.”
