The Athletic experts discussed Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United as his position becomes shaky amid a poor start to the season and a string of defeats.

Michael Carrick's position as head coach of Manchester United has become increasingly uncertain due to his side's dismal start to the season. According to well-respected journalist Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic, the pressure is mounting.

Last season, Carrick showed promise by guiding the Red Devils to a third-place finish in the Premier League, securing a Champions League berth in the process. However, the current campaign has not started well; the club has accumulated just six points from their first six matches in the Premier League. Things took a turn for the worse with a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in European competition and an early exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of Brighton.

Insights from The Athletic's experts

During their Q&A with fans, journalists at The Athletic shared their thoughts on Carrick’s future:

Andy Mitten remarked:

At United, there’s always the pressure to deliver results, something Carrick has been acutely aware of since his playing days. It feels like a narrative we've seen before, although I have no evidence suggesting his dismissal is imminent. Fans are fatigued with the ongoing managerial changes, but the team desperately needs a turnaround. Carrick is also working with fewer resources than his rivals and has to make do with players he hasn't signed.

Seris Jones added:

The patience of the fans wears thin very quickly. Even though supporters are fed up with the constant managerial merry-go-round, poor results will turn them against him—and some already have. The hierarchy remembers the protracted crisis under Ruben Amorim and might endure a fair bit, but there are limits.

Laurie Whitwell concluded:

I don’t believe there’s a strong desire to change head coaches right now—although there are no guarantees that a new person would bring immediate improvement. However, Carrick’s position is beginning to feel quite insecure. He urgently needs one or two wins. If he were to depart, all eyes would shift to the hierarchy for permitting their third managerial change of the season.

Carrick himself remains hopeful, believing in his squad as they prepare for an upcoming vital clash against bitter rivals Leeds United.
