There are growing concerns in English football that Manchester City could feature in the Champions League even if relegated from the Premier League, should they win the competition. The club has appealed against allegations of financial misconduct totalling £920 million.

Serious concerns are growing within English football regarding the possibility that Manchester City could participate in the Champions League next season, even if the club faces relegation due to financial misconduct allegations.

According to BBC Sport, the worry stems from a hypothetical scenario where the Citizens win the current Champions League campaign. In such a case, they would secure entry into Europe’s premier competition next season as defending champions, irrespective of their standing in the English football hierarchy.

  • Absence of legal mechanisms: As noted by BBC Sport, there is currently no automatic mechanism in UEFA or national tournament regulations to exclude a club from European competitions if they have qualified through sporting merit.
  • Nature of the violations: An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of artificially inflating sponsorship revenues by £830 million through fictitious contracts, as well as concealing an additional £90 million in expenses.
  • Scale of the misconduct: The investigation reveals that ignoring these disputed revenues, the club would have consistently breached profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR) in every season from 2009/10 to 2017/18.

Manchester City vehemently denies all allegations, labelling the case as a "Premier League conspiracy," and has officially lodged an appeal against the verdict issued last week.
