Former Chelsea captain John Terry has voiced his worries regarding the team’s defensive stability after an exciting 4-3 win against Brighton. In just two Premier League matches, Xabi Alonso’s squad has conceded five goals.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Terry said:
No matter how good our attacking play is, we've got to focus on our defence. I'm sure the manager will address this in the coming days. Five goals conceded in two matches isn’t good enough. We definitely need to be more solid at the back.
The former defender is optimistic that the arrival of Emiliano Martinez will help improve the situation:
I think with Martinez coming in, calmness will definitely follow. When the manager has time to work with the team in training, I’m sure this is the area he will focus on.
Terry added:
Our coach hasn't had much time to work with the defenders due to the World Cup. Now he will surely concentrate on improving our defensive game.
Chelsea’s next fixture sees them travel away to face reigning champions Arsenal.
Terry remarked:
We have a huge away match against the champions — Arsenal. This will be a serious test. Xabi has five days to work on our defence because Arsenal showed last season just how dangerous they can be in attack.
Terry also named Mikel Arteta’s side as strong title contenders:
For me, Arsenal are clear favourites for the Premier League, so we’re in for a very tough match.
