Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has expressed that the club missed an opportunity to appoint elite managers such as Carlo Ancelotti, Mauricio Pochettino, or Unai Emery, rather than trusting Michael Carrick with the head coach position.
According to Neville, the Red Devils should prioritise top-tier managerial experience over hiring coaches with limited accomplishments at the highest level.
I mentioned last season when Michael first came in: whatever happens, even if he wins every match, we shouldn't confirm him permanently, said Neville on his podcast.
Neville emphasised that a club of Manchester United's stature cannot afford to compromise when choosing their manager and should seek out the very best, regardless of financial implications.
Criticism of players and club structure
Additionally, Neville raised concerns about the club's management structure and harshly criticised some players for their lack of professionalism:
Some of them are not professional enough. I have no time for them. Some of them aren't going to bed on time, eating properly, and don’t think about Manchester United every minute of every day.
In conclusion, Neville suggested that Carrick might soon lose his position, while the press has also mentioned potential successors, including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.
