15-Second Brief
Following two errors from Robert Sanchez in the Fulham match, concerns over Chelsea's number one position have resurfaced. Five potential options for the Blues include Emiliano Martinez and Diogo Costa, alongside Gregor Kobel.
Robert Sanchez's blunders in Chelsea's 3-2 victory over Fulham have once again sparked criticism for the Spanish goalkeeper. Here are five potential replacements the Blues should consider.
The list includes experienced keeper Emiliano Martinez, as well as options looking ahead to several seasons.
- Gregor Kobel. The 28-year-old goalkeeper from Borussia Dortmund has previously been linked with Chelsea. Last season, Kobel won the Bundesliga Golden Glove, keeping 15 clean sheets in 34 matches. With his contract running for another two years, it’s plausible that Dortmund might consider a significant offer, although parting ways with their first-choice keeper before the transfer window closes would be difficult.
- Emiliano Martinez. The 33-year-old Argentine is viewed as a more short-term fix. His main strengths are his vast Premier League experience and leadership qualities. Martinez missed out on Aston Villa's squad for their latest match, with Marco Bizot taking up his position. Additionally, David Ornstein previously reported that Martinez has been offered to Chelsea.
- Diogo Costa. The Porto goalkeeper stands out for his shot-stopping ability and distribution. Last season, Costa saved 80% of shots on target, and at the start of the current season, he managed to stop all seven attempts against him. An added bonus is his proficiency in penalty situations. His release clause is set at £51 million.
- Bart Verbruggen. The 24-year-old goalkeeper from Brighton has recorded 27 clean sheets in 107 club matches, reflecting an impressive 70% save rate last season. Younger than many of the other candidates, Verbruggen has substantial potential for growth. However, Brighton will likely expect a hefty price for their first-choice keeper.
- Marco Carnesecchi. The Atalanta goalkeeper has been linked to Chelsea since the appointment of Xabi Alonso and reportedly featured on the new boss's shortlist. Carnesecchi was named Atalanta's best player last season. There is also interest from Bayern Munich, and Atalanta is said to be open to discussing his sale only for a significant fee.
