Former Italy international Fabio Borini has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35.
Throughout his illustrious career, the forward played for several notable clubs, including Chelsea, Roma, Liverpool, Sunderland, AC Milan, and Sampdoria.
Although he started his journey at Bologna, Borini moved to Chelsea's academy at just 16. He made one appearance for the senior Italy team in 2012, with his last club being English side Salford City.
After the expiration of his contract, the Italian published an emotional farewell letter, thanking Chelsea and recalling his move to London.
It all began with a single flight. Thank you, Chelsea. I was 16 years old. Throughout the flight, I was in tears, embarking on a career path with no clear destination, just a dream I wanted to realise.
From that day, I began to shape myself, unaware of what would become of that lad with such a strong mindset. I started building my dreams in my head, somehow turning them into reality.
The same reality that will change forever today. A reality that has formed my past, my present, and my future. Just as I felt the emotions on that day when I took a flight to London, I feel them now as I look ahead.
Fear. Happiness. Courage. Uncertainty. Dreams. Success. Passion. Sacrifice.
I want to thank that boy who never stopped believing. And the man I am today will continue to believe in new opportunities, this time without a ball at my feet, but with that same faith. Always.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, FOOTBALL.
