Chelsea's attacking midfielder Cole Palmer has promised to repay the club's unwavering trust after signing a new long-term contract and shining in a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth.
On Saturday, the 24-year-old star pledged his future to Stamford Bridge with a deal now extending to at least the summer of 2034. He marked the occasion by starting in the team’s first match back from the international break under manager Xabi Alonso, quickly reaffirming his quality with an assist for Jordan Henderson just two minutes in. After half-time, Morgan Rogers doubled the lead, with Joao Pedro's brace and another from Henderson sealing the 5-1 rout.
After the final whistle, Palmer expressed his joy at the comprehensive team victory, especially with the return of key players from injury:
It was a fantastic victory against a strong opponent. We knew it was going to be a tough task, but we put in a great performance.
It was a wonderful day, particularly with so many key players returning. With almost the whole squad back, it gave us a huge boost, and I feel like we’ve laid a strong foundation for the upcoming games.
Gratitude towards the club hierarchy and adapting to Xabi Alonso's demands
Palmer expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the club hierarchy for the contract offer and highlighted his commitment to give his all:
It feels amazing. I just want to thank the club for believing in me – now I have to repay that on the pitch.
I’m just working hard in training and aiming to show my best; that’s the secret. I feel like I’m back to my best, although the season is just starting, so it’s important to keep it going.
Our journey with the new manager is still in its early stages: he’s still implementing his ideas, but we’re starting to adapt. We’ve worked closely on tactical ideas and interactions this week, and it’s paid off well.
